Alternatives Unlimited

Now, I work for Alternatives Unlimited which is an SES (Supplemental Educational Services) provider. They are part of Bush's No Child Left Behind Act where they go into ghetto schools where most of the students qualify for a free or reduced lunch. They provide after school tutoring to kids. Alternatives Unlimited has contracts with Contra Costa County, Hayward, Berekely, Oakland school districts.

My job is currently doing outreach. I was going to different places that are likely to have a bunch of low-income families and get to the people who work directly with the families to get them to register their kids. I was successful in setting up some meetings for my supervisor to present the program and work with the staff to get families registered. Some of these places were WIC. Another is The Unity Council after school program which is an after schol program in Oakland where the majority of kids are from Spanish speaking low-income families. Another one is a community health center in Berkeley called Lifelong Medical Center where she met with the member services staff. She has upcoming meetings with a rec center in Oakland, Unity Council's WIC program, Matilda Transitional Housing which is a program helping Oakland residents in finding temporary housing.

Now I go to variouis schools in Oakland which are eligible for the program. Last week was registration. Usually, I got 3 applications daily but last Friday, I got 10 applications! This week, I start to go in the mornings for 1-2 hrs and 1 hr in the afternoon. Hopefully, I'll start tutoring in October or November and helping with student assessment when enrollment ends in September.
